Paediatric Stabilisation & Retrieval Course

A 2 day course to give candidates hands on experience in stabilisation and retrieval of the unwell child.

Candidates will take the role of NECTAR/transport medics in simulations and group discussions.

These hands-on sessions will be accompanied by lectures to cover some of the key knowledge required to manage critically unwell children presenting outside the regional PICU.

We will cover Neonatal collapse, paediatric DKA & seizure management and some cardiac conditions.

The course is aimed at physicians who will be involved in the stabilisation and/or transport of critically unwell children.

By the end of the 2-day course attendees will be able to:

  • Clarify NECTAR framework and paediatric referral process.
  • Apply NECTAR guidelines and protocols in the day-to-day work.
  • Evaluate & stabilise critically ill children pre-transport.
  • Recognise how to become involved in paediatric NECTAR transport for those who are interested.

The course is designed over two days, separated by 4-6 weeks to give candidates the opportunity to reflect on what they have learnt, visit NECTAR if they would like and bring any thoughts or questions back to the second day of the course.

Intended audience: Intensive care trainees stage 2 and above Anaesthetics trainees ST4 or above Paediatric trainees ST4 or above PICU Grid trainees
